What if Lionel Messi's greatest talent isn't football?

For years we've admired Messi's goals, passes and dribbles. But what if we've been looking at the wrong thing? What if his greatest gift is something we rarely notice?

Watch him for a moment, not as a football fan, but as someone interested in how the human mind works. Before receiving the ball, Messi constantly scans the field. He estimates distances, predicts trajectories and anticipates where teammates and defenders will be, not where they are. He chooses a pass based on a future that hasn't happened yet. Whether or not he thinks about mathematics consciously, the cognitive processes behind elite spatial vision are remarkably mathematical.

This raises an intriguing question. Could mathematics be much more than the subject we learn at school? Perhaps mathematics is one of the hidden languages through which the human brain understands space, movement and possibility. Perhaps we've been mathematical all our lives.
